We are so broken and need God’s strength daily to give us purpose and the willpower to keep going. Without Him holding us together just as He is holding this universe together, we would surely fall apart and this is what the enemy wants, but God has a different message for us.
I have a decorative piece that got broken by one of my children. Instead of getting upset, the spirit allows me to see it from a different perspective. I looked at the broken glass and immediately thought that my life at the moment was exactly like what I was holding in my hands. When I think about how broken we are, and how we may pretend to have it all together, this couldn’t be farther from the truth, the reality is – we don’t. Without the guidance of the Holy Spirit, we could not have overcome some of the obstacles we have gone through.
We can do nothing to put our lives back together when we fall, so we should stop trying to figure it all out and allow God to. As the scripture states in Isaiah 64:8, God is the potter and we are the clay, He alone can make masterpieces out of us – no one else can. We may not be able to repair the things that have gone wrong in our lives, but we can make things run a lot smoother by allowing God to take control. He cannot heal us if we keep holding on, He cannot fashion us the ways He wants if we keep trying to do it ourselves, and like the broken piece, the more we try to mend and patch it up, it will never look the same, nor can we avoid hurting ourselves in the process.
We should never fight being broken as children of God because being broken tells us that…
- – We need a savior
- – Our hearts are more open to receiving him
- – Helps us draw closer to God
- – We are imperfect and in need of a perfect God
Our brokenness births purposes and that is when our spirit has reached a point of submission and surrender. The brokenness has taught me that there is no life outside of Christ. This also reminds me of Psalms 51:17 which says The sacrifices, O God, is a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart you, God, will not despise. So God requires us to be broken so he can mold and shape us into whatever He wants us to be. Being broken is essential in our Christian walk because when we are broken and disfigured by sin and the darkness around us, then and only then do we recognize that we need God and there is no one else to turn to, but Him.
Thank you, God, that I acknowledge I need a savior in my brokenness. I pray that I will accept the reality that being broken is a stage of refining and perfection. I want to accept every challenge and change with complete humility and patience. May I learn to submit and surrender all my cares and worries to you today so I can rest in your peace. I know you will work everything out for my good, even the things that I wish I did not have to go through. Thank you for allowing me to be broken so that I can watch you put the pieces of my life back together, and show me that I am fearfully and wonderfully made in the image and love of God.
Amen!
